The Japanese are well known for the use of robots in many spheres of life from the factory floor to households. In most cases robots being used at home are not very good and are considered more novelty items then actual working machines. Toyota has decided to change that and has developed a robot that is meant to help senior citizens in Japan. The mechanical helper is to act as an assistant and can be tasked to do important jobs for its owner.
Toyota calls its new device a “partner robot” which falls in the Human Support Robot (HSR) category. The manufacturing giant showcased its new product at Japan’s Home Care & Rehabilitation Exhibition being held in the country. The robot is quite versatile and can do complete tasks that are supposed to help the elderly get through heir day with ease. It does many household tasks and can retrieve items from the floor, open up curtains, reach on top of high shelves and be a bed side assistant. Toyota doesn’t just see the device as a helper at home but also as a good nurse’s aid in hospitals across the country.
The robot can be controlled through a touch screen tablet and is expected to be a very helpful tool for people that have limited mobility or cannot get out of their bed. The HSR should give people more freedom to do their daily tasks independently and safely.
