Considering the implications and plethora of moving parts, there was little doubt that Google’s bid to create a safe and effective self-driving car would take years to be commuting ready. Well, the internet king announced a major breakthrough last week sharing that the company’s fleet of vehicles have logged over 300,000 miles of test drives without issue or accident.
According to TechCrunch, the vehicles have been tested in various traffic conditions, however no indication was made regarding how many of those miles were logged on the company’s secret race course.
There is still a long way to go for the vehicles to be fully “life ready”. According to the official announcement, the cars must still be prepared for snowy conditions, handle rare driving situations as well as the interpretation of temporary construction signals. All of those would have to be effectively mastered before the self-driving cars could even be considered for regular everyday driving.
Google also announced the addition of the Lexus RX450h hybrid to their fleet, which is an absolutely awesome vehicle. The fact that this project is where it is at all is to be commended, and Google deserves high praise for their use of technology in making our planet a better place.
We at TQ are always glad to share stories like this, and we are grateful for the opportunity to share them with you. We are also glad to share the following video to show you what Google’s self-drive system is capable of and also to show you what surprised people look and swear like.
