Twitter Introduces Range of Instagram Style Photo Filters

It appears that the conflict between photo sharing platform Instagram and micro-blogging website Twitter is getting more intense with the passage of time, as Twitter has introduced a range of photo filters as of yesterday. Late last week it was learnt that employees of the micro-blogging website had already engaged in testing the latest photo filter features, surprising users with an official announcement of the additional features.

The skirmish between the two social media giants began when Facebook acquired Instagram for $1 billion back in April of this year, an acquisition Twitter was believed to be interested in making themselves. After that, the scuffle got more severe as Instagram recently decided to prohibit its pictures to properly appear on Twitter Cards. Users of this micro-blogging website can now only see a link to Instagram pictures in their timeline rather than a fully uninhibited image, which had been the case until late last week.

Although Twitter users can still view Instagram pictures, the actual means of doing so are more cumbersome and therefore far less appealing than before. On the other hand, Twitter might have been expecting this move from Instagram, as rumours of Twitter introducing photo filters are nothing new, with similar rumblings heard at the beginning of November 2012.

Now these rumours have been proven true, with one source claiming that Twitter’s Chairman, Jack Dorsey had begun experimented with posts using black and white filters late last week. According to Twitter, partner firm Aviary is powering the newly added filters. It has long been expected that Twitter may offer higher resolution (1024×1024 pixels) images than Instagram (612×612 pixels), with square shaped pictures akin to the photo sharing website’s.

The decision clearly marks a line being drawn in the sand as one time chummy firms have now become direct competitors to one another.
