The world’s most valuable company, Apple Inc, announced on Monday, January 7 that users had downloaded more than 40 billion applications from the firms iOS App Store. The remarkable milestone was achieved by Apple’s App Store with in four short years and amazingly the released figures do not show re-downloaded apps.

The most interesting break down of the 40 billion app downloads according to Apple is that about half or 20 billion downloads came only in the past year. A whopping 2 billion apps were downloaded in the month of December 2012. The reason behind this boost in app downloading during December was due to the holiday shopping rush.

Another major reason behind this massive raise in app downloading was the activation of a record shattering numbers of iOS powered devices during Christmas week and on Christmas Day, as reported by various independent research firms a week before Apple revealed this huge downloading figure. It is because of this very reason December remained a big month for Cupertino company’s App Store.

At this point in time, there are about 23 different categories on Apple’s App Store, which features in excess of 775,000 apps for various devices from the tech giant, including, iPhone, iPod and iPad.
