Research in Motion, the Canadian developer of the BlackBerry smartphone and tablet, has received positive nod from Visa with respect to the former’s method for handling secure mobile payments. This will allow all the devices in the world using RIM’s payment mode to utilise Visa facilities.

RIM’s highlight creation, BlackBerry, is used all over the world by senior level employees of different organisations including military, corporate giants and others. However, its market share has now been occupied by Apple’s iPhones, and other smartphones using Android. RIM is hoping to recapture its market and planning on launching new version of BlackBerry soon.

Getting Visa’s nod is indeed a positive omen for RIM. According to The Globe and Mail, Frank Maduri, a RIM senior director responsible for mobile payment services, said of the agreement between the two companies:

The approval from Visa of RIM’s SEM solution is an important step in that it will enable carriers to support Visa issuing banks and financial institutions.”

He added:

“We now offer carriers a robust solution with around-the-clock global support that works on any NFC-capable device, and meets the stringent technology and usability guidelines for Visa.”

RIM’s Secure Element Manager (SEM) technology allows different mobile networks to manage devices equipped with close-range wireless payments. Whether RIM’s system will enable to compete in the market with Apple, Samsung and other companies creating smartphones is a separate debate; however, the Canadian-based company is certainly now gearing up to give tough time to other market leaders.
