BlackBerry 10 has been making waves as its launch date approaches. As expected, one of the more frequently asked question about the platform is the apps that will be available for download. Research In Motion (RIM) has tried very hard to bring developers to the platform and has succeeded in most cases by offering surprising revenue totals. However, Crackberry reports that the popular cross platform messenger service, WhatsApp, will not be featured on BB10.
The exact text of the email sent to the BlackBerry news blog was as follows: “We have no plans to support BlackBerry 10 at the moment, sorry.”
One of the reasons the WhatsApp team is not going to be launching a native app for BB10 could be that they are waiting to see how the platform performs. Porting an application from a different platform to a new one can be a time consuming task. Most startups have limited engineers and time and prefer to pursue avenues that can provide them with the most impact. In this case, iPhone and Android based phones are key to WhatApp’s success. In the email, the WhatApp team did say that they do not have plans at the moment so it can be concluded that they may change their mind if BB10 takes off.
Another issues is that the BlackBerry Messenger service is a direct competitor of WhatsApp. It can even be argued that WhatsApp was developed to imitate BBM in a cross-platform environment. The fact that RIM has a plethora of plans for BBM on its latest platform could be the ultimate deterrent.
