Based out of Minnesota, employee scheduling service provider WhenIWork, offers small businesses a tool to help in shift scheduling. The services is cloud-based and lets employers schedule works for their staff and communicate with them using multiple platforms including the internet, iOS apps, Android Apps, email and social media. WhenIWork got started two years ago and has quickly grown to have 50,000 monthly active users with hundreds more signing up every week.

WhenIWork CEO, Chad Halvorson, explains his inspiration for the service because of his background as a grocery store employee and web developer. He states to Betakit that, “It was late 90s and I was always kind of frustrated having to go to the grocery store to check my work schedule. I thought It’d be pretty cool if I could just go online and check my work schedule so I wouldn’t have to go on my day off or call someone, so that’s kind of where the spark came from. When mobile started becoming more of a mainstream thing, I thought that it was the right time to go back and look at this scheduling idea and leverage mobile heavily with it.”

The startups service is pretty straight forward with a business signing up and sending invitations to their employees. Once the staff joins the platform they can view their schedules as it is created and published by the employer. Employees can also get a text message, email, mobile app notification or Facebook update about the schedule. WhenIWork allows employers to check out employee availability while letting staff ask for days off, change shifts, and communicate with the employer.

Halvorson says that, “We wanted to create an employee scheduling and communication application that was extremely easy for end users to figure out. Because everything else out there is extremely painful, it’s a hassle to set up, a pain to use. We created a platform that is focused exclusively on scheduling and does it really well for our users and customers.”

Right now, WhenIWork is focusing on the food, retail, and healthcare industry but has gotten a good response from the entertainment industry as well. The company has a fairly cheap pricing structure and charge a monthly subscriptions starting from $12 for 12 employees to $99 for 100 staff members.

The small and medium business community has gotten a lot of attention from startups lately with several competitors in the field. However, WhenIWork believes that its ease of use and mobile technology emphasis will set it apart. New services like labor forecasting and location based notifications should help them further expand their user base.
