The next wave of fridges, washers and dryers created for the internet savvy generation has come to Canada thanks to Korean firms who are at the forefront of such technology.
According to the Financial Post, Samsung will begin selling a Wi-Fi connected fridge featuring a 20 centimeter touch screen which functions in a similar fashion to a tablet. The fridge is expected to retail with an MSRP of $3,900 and features a myriad of apps that make life in the kitchen easier for Canadian families.
Apps include connection to the popular Google Calendar tool, allowing families to track and share their appointments and events on the family fridge. The device will also include an app that allows people within a household to leave important onscreen messages for one another.
In an effort to truly make life easier, apps that allow for digital inventory tracking of the fridge’s contents as new groceries are being stored as well as the ability to track and remind others of food expiry dates are also included. The latter would certainly go a long way in reducing food spoilage and the mess that comes with it.
Other basic functions include an Epicurious app for recipe ideas as well as news coverage that includes weather, Associated Press news as well as Twitter access. When the screen is not being used by one of the aforementioned apps it can act as a digital photo album.
Samsung is leveraging their wide range of successful products particularly those relating to consumer electronics to bring the next wave of appliances to the masses. Although the FP reports that the touch screen functionality leaves a little bit to be desired, it is a step in the right direction to useful and impressive functionality.
Fellow Korean tech company LG will introduce a Wi-Fi connected washer and dryer combination that is expected to retail for $3,000 sometime this year. The line of ‘smart’ laundry machines will allow users to start, pause and stop the machines remotely as well as check the cycle status via Smartphone and tablet apps.
