Windows 8 has become a big success amongst consumers as well as the developer community as more and more people choose to upgrade.

By December 27, 2012, Microsoft had sold around 40 million licenses of the new operating system and the huge sales momentum has helped in encouraging developers to come out with applications for the operating system’s Windows Store.

Windows 8 was launched with much fanfare in October 2012. The operating system on launch became the first Windows edition to boast its own application marketplace while before boxed software ruled the roost. Additionally, Windows 8 also did away with the iconic start button, that had graced Microsoft’s leading operating system since its first edition decades ago, being replaced by live colourful tiles similar to those on the Windows Phone operating system.

With Windows 8 becoming increasingly popular around the world developers have been working hard on bringing their new applications to the Windows Store.

At launch the OS boasted just 10,000 available applications but as its popularity grew steadily as more and more applications were added with the Store on December 27th boasting more than 35,000 applications.

Microsoft since the launch of the operating system has accelerated the addition of new applications to the Windows Store with 415 being added per day. At this rate the store will boast 50,000 applications by February 1st.

Microsoft took a huge risk by doing away with the user interface that people had grown accustomed to over the years but it seems that risk has paid off and Windows 8 is expected to become even more popular entering 2013.
