Automattic made it known on Monday, July 15th that it has got hold of a small time service called Lean Domain Search. The best thing about the deal is that Lean Domain Search will remain available for free use, while the founder of the little service, Matt Mazur will join Automattic as a developer.

Automattic is known for developing the popular blogging service WordPress.com which was made available to users free of charge. In addition to this, Automattic has also made a major contribution to building the open-source blogging software WordPress that is available at WordPress.org.

Most people gets confused between the two products and it is getting essential for Automattic to make the distinction between the two software offerings. So on the WordPress.com front, Mazur will help out Automattic to get rid of this issue.

Here is how Lean Domain Search founder has explained this acquisition over its site:

“I’m thrilled to announce that Lean Domain Search has been acquired by Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com!

At Automattic I’ll be working full time on making it even easier for WordPress.com users to find and register great domain names for their websites and blogs.

What does this mean for Lean Domain Search? Not only will it continue to run, but it’s also now completely free to use. There is even now an option in Lean Domain Search to register domain names directly through WordPress.com, making it easier than ever to start a website with a great domain name.

I’d like to extend a special thanks to my wife, my family and friends, the Orlando tech community, and Lean Domain Search’s users for their tireless support and feedback. Lean Domain Search wouldn’t be what it is without all of you.

If you’re new to Lean Domain Search and want to check it out for yourself, you’re welcome to head on over to the homepage to perform your own search. Cheers!

Matt Mazur

Founder, Lean Domain Search.”

This decision of acquiring one man team, on the other hand, must be an easy one for Automattic, as it was better than starting from the scratch, when a small service is already doing that. In fact, Lean Domain Search has already got some WordPress.com integration, which is indeed a great start for Mazur.

Now let’s see how Automattic and Mazur will together take the WordPress.com platform to the next level by integrating Lean Domain Search’s technology into it.
