After Microsoft, technology giant Google is also looking to introduce its very own touchscreen laptops called ‘Chrome Pixel’ according to the latest update from the Wall Street Journal. The news outlet has reported that its sources familiar with Google’s plans has claimed that the search engine giant has developed a touchscreen Chromebook. The sources of the Journal also made it known that these touchscreen laptops will be made available for sale later in 2013. The details regarding the touchscreen Chrome OS laptops are pretty scarce at the moment. The WSJ’s report came right after a leaked video of a touchscreen Chromebook surfaced over the internet but it is not known which hardware manufactures are involved in the project with Google and whether it’s a valid story.
Previously, Google has joined hands with Acer and Samsung to create and sell its Chromebooks. Now HP has also joined the course by introducing a 14-inch Chrome OS laptop that bears a price tag of US$330. So we have to wait a little to know more about the project, but as far as the current Chrome OS is concerned one thing is for sure that Google has to bring several significant changes to this operating system in order to run it on the touchscreen Chromebook. Unlike Windows and iOS, Chrome OS relies on internet connectivity and uses the cloud for storage and applications. Due to this very reason Google has also introduced offline modes for its apps in their subsequent updates.
Therefore, for touchscreen laptops, the Chrome OS requires a traditional Windows or iOS like interface but at this point in time it is not clear how Google would place the new device against the ever increasing demand of tablets, especially once that are running on Android OS. Low-price could be one factor that could solidify touchscreen Chromebooks position against tablets because the company has produced the current Chrome OS laptops at an affordable prices thanks to the ARM processor.
Tomorrow Google has set up a press meeting in San Francisco, but it is unclear whether the conference is arranged to announce the touchscreen Chromebook or it’s related to another project from the company. Nevertheless, as they say where there is a smoke there is a fire, so we expect to see more rumours regarding this latest development until Google issues an official confirmation or denial of the report from WSJ.
