Yahoo has been in the process of making itself a major player in the technology sector after it lost out market share to competitors like Google and Bing. the company has developed a new strategy in which it is looking at new venues of profit generation. The recently appointed CEO of the company, Marissa Mayer, is a former top executive from Google and has big plans for her company. One of the goals the company had was to acquire small technologies that would help the company become more competitive. One area of interest for Yahoo has become mobile and the company bought location discovery app Alike on February 12 to help bolster this area. Mayer’s leadership also saw Yahoo purchase another startup called Snip.it at the start of 2013 and a video platform called OnTheAir in December of 2012. Of course Yahoo has not all been about acquisitions. The in-house team has developed many features including upgrading its email apps for mobile platforms including iOS, Android, and Windows 8.
After the acquisition Alike will stop providing its iPhone and web application for users. The startups development team will join Yahoo’s mobile department and their platform that allowed users to locate venues close to their location based on interests and their friends suggestions will be absorbed into Yahoo.
Alike mentioned the buy out by Yahoo on their website that has been now shutdown by stating the following:
“At Alike, we’ve spent the last couple of years working hard to build amazing mobile experiences to delight our customers, which is why we’re thrilled to announce some big news: we’re joining Yahoo! Mobile. We’ve always been passionate about the growing power of intelligent mobile experiences. We believe that distilled information, deeply personalized and made accessible anytime and anywhere, is what makes mobile experiences a part of our customers’ daily lives. In Yahoo! we’ve found a team as excited about this vision as we are, and who are serious about making it real. We’re super excited to join Yahoo!’s mobile team, where we can march toward that vision faster than ever. As of today, we will no longer support the Alike Nearby iPhone and Web apps. Thank you to all our customers, partners, investors, and advisors who’ve supported us from day one! We’ve taken a big step on our journey, and we could not have done it without your support.”
