Yahoo staff working from their home have been asked by the management to report to the offices near them and start working from the workplace from June this year. The HR memo that was circulated among thousands of Yahoo employees in different parts of the world has drawn a critical response on part of employees, who think that this decision might hurt their motivation level.

“Beginning in June, we’re asking all employees with work-from-home arrangements to work in Yahoo! offices. If this impacts you, your management has already been in touch with next steps,” said the memo, via AllThingsD.

Yahoo has a workforce of over 10,000 people. Although the decision is not going to affect all of them, those who are presently working from home have not appreciated the new decision. The reason for asking the staff to be together physically is to improve the work efficiency. The memo said:

“To become the absolute best place to work, communication and collaboration will be important, so we need to be working side-by-side. That is why it is critical that we are all present in our offices. Some of the best decisions and insights come from hallway and cafeteria discussions, meeting new people, and impromptu team meetings. Speed and quality are often sacrificed when we work from home. We need to be one Yahoo!, and that starts with physically being together.”

Yahoo has not responded to the negative reaction the employees have shown after the memo was released. When contacted by different entities, the Yahoo administration declined commenting on this development, saying it does not comment on internal matters.

By the looks of the things, this seems to be a strange decision by the company’s management because it is a proven fact that employees can work from home in flexible hours with more efficiency. The sudden need for the staff to be physically together is somewhat disturbing, at least for the employees. For the time being, we do not have anything more to report on this development except the reaction of the employees that is not very favourable for the management. The employees are asked to move to the offices from June. It means they still have a few months to work from home, and maybe make a decision about staying with the company in the longer run.
