Popular local review website, Yelp, stated on October 31 that they have launched a new feature which allows its users to check out restaurant menus online. The menus are viewable on the start-up’s website and mobile apps and are accompanied by user submitted images of the eatery’s dishes. Yelp added the ability for restaurants to add links to their menus within the site’s listings but the website did not allow any actual menus on its own site until now.

According to Yelp, “We’ve combed the site to compile visual menus incorporating Yelp reviews and user-uploaded food pictures. Now you can not only read about that decadent chocolate raspberry truffle cheesecake swimming in a pool of hot fudge, you can see real users’ photos of said gut-busting dessert from every angle right alongside the menu item.”

Yelp developers have made accessing the new functionality simple. Users are merely required to hit the “Explore the Menu” button. Once they have done so, said user will be presented with the menu in Yelp’s format along with the food name, dish information and price. Users will also be able to see reviews from other diners along with images, providing a strong overall indication of the restaurant. Another cool feature added by the Yelp teal is the “What’s Popular Here?” section. This allows users to see what other are discussing and which particular dishes are being talked about the most.

Yelp demonstrates the new feature by asking users to check out “Gilroy’s Famous Garlic Ice Cream” which is available at the The Stinking Rose restaurant in Los Angeles, California. Yelp’s algorithm highlights the ice cream as a popular item because many users are talking about the dish and have added several images and reviews. Interestingly, the feature only showcases items that are being discussed or talked about the most. Popularity does not imply that it is a positively reviewed dish.

Yelp wants its users to help it create a complete and informative form of menu that has a lot of user generated content. In a recent blog post, the Yelp team asks people to “Make note of what menu items you tried in your next restaurant review, and upload your own foodie shots with a caption so we know what to order.”

The new features will be available on the website, mobile app and mobile website at the same time on November 1.
