There are so many dating sites online that it can be hard to distinguish between the many offerings available to users. That is why entrepreneurs that are looking to differentiate themselves from the crowd try to infuse their dating platform with a new twist on the old idea. YouLike sets its self apart from the competition by considering users dislikes along with their likes. The interest based social network and dating website helps couples meet online and was founded by the team behind the eBay clone GittiGidiyor from Turkey.
A user gets to see the difference of YouLike right away during th sign up process. The site asks about a single persons likes, dislikes and preferences instead of the regular old questions. A user can choose from a range of choices that include “love”, “like”, “dislike”, “hate”, or “skip” that will later help create matches.
The site has purposely stayed away from importing Facebook ‘Like’ data from a user’s profile in order to avoid “dirty-data”. The fresh data allows users to see their compatibility with other users when they visit their profile. The system generates lists named “you both like”, “you both dislike”, “you like but he/she dislikes”, and “you dislike but he/she likes”.
The Turkish website says that they want their potential couples to see each other in other ways than the traditional method employed by dating sites. They believe their system lets a user see a potential partners “morals, habits and beliefs… and the things that make them angry or happy.” This lets give a unique insight into the future of a relationship which they believe is a strong selling point. YouLike is aiming at carving out a niche for itself in the very competitive sector and co-founder Levent Gültansays that, “Online dating is a highly saturated industry with many competitors fighting to find people looking for love online. Many start-ups try to differentiate themselves by playing the innovation card, however very few to none has successfully replicated the track record of OkCupid or HowAboutWe.”
YouLike’s other co-founders include Ersan Özer who has some previous experience with dating sites. He founded another Turkish dating network before creating his most recent startup. Hopefully the co-founders previous work experience and new approach to dating will give them a chance to break into the online dating industry. Ever since it was launched in April of 2012, the site has grown and has gotten 310,000 USD in funding.
