Privacy issue is one of the major issues in Australian website. The Office of the Australian Information Commission (OAIC) in May 2013 reviewed the privacy policies of 50 major Australian web sites and come up with interesting results. The information commission has recently changed the privacy policy requirements according to which all online businesses have to become fully compliant until March 2014.
Each privacy policy must be assessed against three major criteria. Readability: Each policy must be easy to read and understand by everyone. Relevance: The privacy policies must not be too long and must be relevant to the website. Accessibility: Everyone must easily access the privacy policies on the website.
The results of the OAIC review have now been released by the Privacy Commissioner and they are not pretty. According to them, about 83% of the websites had an issue with any one of the three criteria mentioned above. More than 65% of the websites had privacy policies that were too long. There were 50% of the websites whose privacy policies were difficult to read and understand by everyone. Some websites contained provisions for the US or UK only, but not for Australia.
Sadly, these are the results for the top Australian websites that are at the top because of their obligation and not cutting corners. For the past two years Australian regulators have focused privacy issues quite seriously. With the advancement in technology more and more people are now connected to the Internet, more regulatory resources have been put into ensuring that online businesses must meet every obligations of the privacy policy.
Online businesses also include mobile phone app marketers who also need to post privacy policies with their apps – not less than a surprise for many app developers. According to the new privacy law of the Australian Information Commission (OAIC), every organization must have a current and readable privacy policy.
