The “Canada’s Top 100 Employers” list was recently revealed and from all the players in the Canadian mobile industry only TELUS and SaskTel managed to make the cut. Major firms like Rogers, Bell, and Research In Motion were not mentioned in the awards list that is created by Mediacorp Canada.
Mediacorp explained why TELUS was given the honor and stated that the company’s charitable work, community work and good financial rewards set them apart from other firms. Furthermore, TELUS has a “Work Styles” program that lets employees complete their work related responsibilities from home and also has employee development programs that help staff gain new skills. The mobile service provider has 24,443 full-time employees in Canad along with 3,596 part-time employees.
SaskTel made the list for similar reasons including their internal policy that awards staff with $2,500 for developmental programs. SaskTel also encourages good health and fitness in its 3,131 full-time employees and 629 part-time employees by giving them complimentary gym memberships. The company also has fitness areas on their business campuses so that staff members can have easy access to such facilities.
Mediacorp spoke about the selection process and mentioned that they “invited 10,000 of the fastest-growing employers, plus 6,000 other companies and organizations in industries that our editors wanted to examine more closely.” The complete group of companies was then graded in eight different sectors including Physical Workplace; Work Atmosphere & Social; Health, Financial & Family Benefits; Vacation & Time Off; Employee Communications; Performance Management; Training & Skills Development; and Community Involvement.
It is interesting to note that only two firms represent the wireless providers on Canada’s Top 100 Employers list. According to the CWTA (Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association) the Canadian mobile sector creates $43 billion in revenue employees 260,000 people in the country making it a major contributor to the overall economy. We at TQ sincerely hope to see more wireless and start-ups make the cut next year.
