California based Blurtopia launched its latest feedback app for the iOS platform on at the beginning of this month. The app allows users to aggregate the opinions of others through “blurts” which can be set up so that others can either share their sentiments via a thumbs up or down, a one to five rating or choose between two options.
Even though Blurtopia is a mechanism for getting feedback from thousands of people at once, the San Diego based company has also added features for customization. For example, users can ask the opinion of their circle of friends and not the entire Blurtopia community. The app also lets user’s setup pre-defined groups through a tagging service. Beta testing has shown that the group setting is not as popular as the general setting which allows the maximal number of people the ability to respond to a Blurt.
Ryan Bettencourt, co-founder of the start-up had originally been working on the idea for enterprise decision making. However, an encounter with a woman at the mall using her smartphone to text pictures of shoes to friends to get their opinion gave Bettencourt the push he needed to change direction.
Blurtopia uses a fairly simple tagging system to create loosely based groups and the creators of the app believe that as people use the system they will attract their group of friends to join in and cause a network effect. In the testing phase the company tried all sorts of Blurts including simple every day issues like what to order at a restaurant, to more long term debates like which classic rock and roll band was the greatest. Bettencourt stated that their results showed that “users have become addicted to both answering blurts and receiving instant feedback on their own questions.”
Some competitors like Thumbs have been around since 2010 and has had a lot of success. However, Blurtopia will be focusing on its group feature to make the idea more personal and a good way of interacting with friends. Check out the introduction video below.
