The use of smartphones, laptops and tablets have become a common site thanks to WiFi hot spots that easily provide users with bandwidth. Users can now always keep themselves updated with the latest news or entertain themselves by playing games, music, streaming videos and reading various content on their internet connected device. To facilitate drivers, BMW has introduced a 4G LTE hotspot for its vehicles, so that riders can enjoy high speed internet on the go.

As Project Manager for BMW Car Hotspot LTE Development, Markus Dietz says, “The very fast bit rates and extremely low latency mean that an internet connection supported by the BMW Car Hotspot LTE is often even faster than a PC connection in the home”.

This WiFi enabled device basically works like a router, which allows passengers to gain internet access with a laptop, smartphone or tablet. Moreover, the hotspot is capable of easily supporting up to eight different devices at the same time. It connects to the car through USB “and has an input for an external power supply,” according to NY Daily News, so this 4G LTE device could be used in other cars as well.

In addition to this, the hotspot comes with a fixed battery pack which can be taken out of the BMW to use on the go for about one hour before it needs to be recharged. The range of this device is also pretty good, as it can be adjusted between three and 10 metres, so users can not only get internet access inside the vehicle, but while standing out of the car as well.

The interesting thing about this 4G LTE hotspot is that it works with both new and old models of BMW by simply developing a connection with the telephone docking station of the vehicle. Since it’s an LTE enabled device it works with a SIM card that supports LTE networks. So once a SIM is inserted into this device, all that it requires is an eight digit code to get registered after which it will be ready to use.

Given that this 4G LTE hotspot is also Near Field Communication (NFC) compatible, mobile device users can also gain access to high speed internet by simply touching their device to the system. This is the first time that the NFC feature has been offered to car riders says BMW but the automaker still has not given out the price of the device that will make its debut in Europe this week.
