Thanks to a company known as Mobile Innovations, Canadian police vehicles may soon be fitted with RIM’s tablet technology nationwide, replacing the current laptops that are dated and more costly. Currently, two new Dodge Charger police cruisers are being tested in the Chatham-Kent region of Ontario. The technology integrates the tablet into the vehicle’s dashboard via a dock that allows the tablet to be used as a mobile device as well, further increasing its functionality and applicability.
Thus far, the PlayBooks have been integrated to such a degree that they are able to control the vehicle’s sirens, lights and receive all information and communication information. Another valuable benefit is that the device can also serve as a recording device (via the front facing camera) to monitor activity taking place in the back seat should the officers find a straggler.
To be honest, the idea and the possibilities created by this type of technology is exciting for law enforcement officials. Currently, the devices come equipped with a physical keyboard and printer, making the tablet easy to use for data recording and production. Other valuable features include secure and reliable access to police files and recordings as well as the ability to geo-tag and time-stamp evidence and information.
Further advances could lead to voice activated commands as well as real time GPS functionalities such as tracking. As is, the tablets currently relay the 911 information to the officers with the ability to locate and provide directions using the device immediately.
Mobile Innovations in collaboration with law enforcement personnel hope to have ten such vehicles operating and applying the technology by year end.
