According to Engadget the brand new version of voice control app Dragon Mobile Assistant can identify when the user is in a moving vehicle and automatically turn on the hands-free feature, which allows the user to interact with his or her mobile device by voice alone. “Driver Mode relies solely on voice recognition and feedback, keeping your focus on the road. Accordingly, the upgrade builds in spoken notifications for inbound calls, messages, upcoming meetings and Facebook updates. There’s also voice-aware email and customizable wake up commands …” However, users still need to remain careful while using their mobile device in hands-free mode, as the latest research by the University of Utah has shown that using mobile phones even with hands-free mode activated can cause distraction and prove quite dangerous for drivers.

“The research found that as mental workload and distractions increase, reaction time slows, brain function is compromised, drivers scan the road less and miss visual cues, potentially resulting in drivers not seeing items right in front of them including stop signs and pedestrians.”
